Inclusive swimming - Plötzensee lido

The Joachim-Fahl-Haus, a special housing project for people with disabilities, and the Plötzensee lido are direct neighbors on the northern shore of Lake Wedding. They know each other, like each other, and help each other. The residents of the Joachim-Fahl-Haus enjoy visiting the lido and the lovely beach bar at Plötzensee. The problem is that some residents use wheelchairs or have severely limited mobility. Until now, wheelchair access to the beach, the water, and the beach bar was impossible. Working together to remove these barriers, Michel and Florian, the lido's operators, provide the location, materials, and their infrastructure. Supporters from the Unionhilfswerk (Union Relief Organization) contribute considerable commitment and expertise in inclusion and accessibility. During a major work effort last year, many dedicated volunteers laid a path made of reinforced concrete slabs. In total, they laid a 250-meter-long path across the sandy beach using individual hexagonal slabs. Last year, this created an accessible path to the beach bar. A few weeks ago, the path was extended, so there is now also access to the water. An underwater platform for wheelchair users is planned. In addition, a beach wheelchair was recently purchased, equipped with special balloon tires for navigating sand and corrosion protection. The beach operators hope that these afternoons, which began last year, will become "model days of inclusion." They offer an opportunity for people with and without disabilities to meet in a beautiful setting, eat together, celebrate, and swim. On these inclusive beach days, volunteers are available on-site to assist visitors. They can be identified by their yellow T-shirts and caps. They help with wayfinding and orientation. Furthermore, there is an inclusive program of activities, including music, creative workshops, and sports. Some highlights include: the cooperation with Special Olympics Berlin, sets by DJs from the inclusive label Ick mach Welle, DJ Andi as well as DJs from the inclusion parties at Lido, live performances by Supa Star Soundsystem, Yansn, DIRTYCOR and Graf Fidi, public viewing of the European Championship games, inclusive stand-up paddleboarding, an inclusive dance workshop, jewelry making, henna tattoos and much more.
